Ecology and Society

Students study and compare human and natural ecosystems using diversity, interrelations, cycles, and energy as the conceptional organization; central themes of the course are sustainability, stewardship and science.

Ecological Modeling

Philosophical basis, theoretical framework, and practical application of systems analysis and simulation within the context of ecology and natural resource management; emphasis placed on development, evaluation and use of simulation models by students.

Wetland Delineation

Application of the 1987 Wetland Delineation Manual in use by the Army Corps of Engineers; field indicators of hydrophytic vegetation, hydric soils, wetland hydrology, methods for making jurisdictional determination in non-disturbed and disturbed areas, recognition of problem wetlands and technical guidelines for wetlands. One-week intensive course held on-site.

Ecology of Our Changing World

Foundations of ecological and evolutionary relationships of organisms with other organisms and with the physical environment, emphasizing populations, communities, and ecosystems. Integration of basic science with applications of science to understanding human interactions with the environment.

Graduate Special Topics: Ecology of Animal Populations

In this course, we will review fundamental concepts in animal population ecology, develop expertise in estimating population size and vital rates, and examine single-species, multi-species, age-structured, and spatial models of population dynamics, as well as life history strategies. This class will demonstrate how knowledge of population dynamics informs conservation, management, ecology, and evolution. It will also provide ‘hands-on’ experience that will be applicable to professional careers in wildlife management, conservation and population ecology.

Wildland Fire Ecology

Coverage of fire histories and ecology of major forest, rangeland and wetland ecosystems. Includes fire interactions with physical and biotic components of ecosystems, role of fire in ecological processes, and utilization in natural resource management.
